Christmas Devotional/Nativity/Sacrament - Ninjas - Christmas Dinner - Presents - Hug From Mom - Finding Blessings In The Small Things Around Us Despite The Struggles

I hope you guys don't mind, but I think this blog entry is going to be a whole lot of pictures :) This is my Mission President and his Wife with me and my companion at the Christmas devotional. That devotional was one of the most special experiences I have had in a while. I had the chance to play a part in the Nativity and after, we partook of the sacrament. It is something I have never done, take the sacrament on a different day than Sunday, but the spirit was so strong because of it.

Sometimes we have fun playing Ninja at bus stops, when the buses decide to just not come... :) (I'm taking the picture...)

Even though I didnt get to celebrate Christmas with my family, The family Antunez "adopted us" for Christmas and spent some really special time with them and ate some amazing argentine meat!

This is us waiting to open all of our presents (okay to be honest almost all of them were mine --thanks Mom and Dad for the packages!!!--) next to our "Christmas Tree" -

(Clarification from Dad on the multiple packages :-)

Having heard that we may never be allowed to send him a gift, Taylor's Mom was determined to ensure that he had something to open on Christmas.  Before he left, she packed a Christmas gift in his suitcase with him...he had the self control to not open it until Christmas.  I am impressed.  Then we found out that as a family, we are allowed to send him a Christmas gift...so we did (the big one on the floor in the picture) giving him two to open this year :-)  We love him and are so glad that we were able to send gifts to him this year!)

Okay this is my by far favorite present! My mom sent me a Hug! 2 hands, like the one you see here, and a string that would represent her arms! I love my mom!

Okay this is my backpack and this is a present that Shauna gave me (its from Hunger Games) I am going to be wearing this little pin with me for the rest of my mission so I can remember my siblings and how awesome they are! (It was so fun talking to them this Wednesday!)

Me enjoying the sunset of Argentina. It is interesting how sometimes things can get really hard in life, or in the mission, but you can always find something to make you happy. Yesterday it was the sunset. My companion is really struggling to be happy, and having a hard time continuing working because we have had so little success in our area. Normally I wouldn't want to talk about numbers, but I kinda want you all to see how hard it has been here in our area - and that really my companion does have reason to be frustrated.  As a mission we have a goal to always try and have at least 4 investigators at Church on Sunday. While I have been here we have had 2 attendances total. (That is in 11 months).  We realized that our area was struggling, but we just decided to keep working, despite the lack of shown success. We really thought we were going to have somebody in church on Sunday but they didn't show :( but what really killed my companion is that the other Elders in our ward had 4 in church and the Hermanas, had 7.

Sometimes it really seems like what we are trying to do isn't of much worth, but something that my mission president told me is that if when we get home, and lay down in bed, exhausted from all the work you have done, and feel like a missionary, then, you have done enough. I will keep working and do everything I can to be the best missionary possible!

I hope you all had an awesome Christmas!
Happy New year too!

He Is The Gift - Christmas - "My Missionaries = My Parents" - Snoring Newbie In Apartment

I cant believe it but we are really in the season of Christmas already! I am so excited to have the chance to "Share the gift" during this Christmas season. I hope you all have had opportunities to share the love and peace that Christ brings to us on a daily basis. Please watch this video it is awesome!

As it is Christmas, I have been told by many missionaries that this was going to be the hardest part of my mission, but so far, I am loving it. For one, Christmas Eve I will be speaking to my family! Woohoo! and secondly, our mission president decided that he wanted us to really have a day to enjoy this Christmas. We aren't supposed to go out and preach, but we have to go out and do something fun for the whole day! We are so excited as a district and I am trying to come up with some fun ideas!

As a district we set up the coolest Christmas party ever for the Barrio here in Obera! We decided to do a skit for everybody to watch and it was SUPER funny! I am not going to describe the whole skit, but just know that I was a rebellious Pokemon trainer, who didn't want to have Christmas Dinner with the family because I was too busy training my Pikachu.

Okay so I am going to switch topics again, I started to realize that truly every person has there missionary. What do I mean by that? Well I have been talking with lots of missionaries (lots of which are converts) and they always talk about "their missionaries", being the missionaries who helped them on their way to conversion. I started thinking about that and how really I have my missionaries in this life too. They are my Parents. I want to publicly thank them, for teaching me the gospel and teaching me to love the Lord. My parents truly were the best missionaries for me and I give thanks daily that they were willing to sacrifice so much, to help me gain a testimony.
I realize how wonderful my parents are every week by the letters they send me. They still support me. They still strengthen my testimony, and still are my missionaries.
My companion just received a letter for the first time in a very long time. When he started reading it, he was close to tears. I asked what happened, and he explained that his dad, for the first time in his life told him he loved him.
My Dad told me that he loves me everyday while I was there, and even now, he writes almost every day, even if it is just a short note to let me know that he loves me. I know that I was blessed with incredible parents and truly never could repay them for all that they have done for me.

Okay I know I am bouncing all over the place with this letter, but I have to explain another trial that I have gone through recently.
A newbie just got here this transfer and he is super cool and is really excited to work hard. His companionship shares a house with us. Although he is a super great missionary and really awesome..... he snores.... a lot.... like louder than a chainsaw.... haha. For four straight days this past week I had less than 5 hours of sleep because of his snoring and that is not safe for how much walking and physical hard labor that we do. I started getting sick and my body started to get reaaally achy! I could barely turn my neck and it was getting hard to stay awake while walking... yeah. Finally we decided to call the mission nurse and she simply told me to start using earplugs and go to bed an hour and a half early. So I did that, and wow I feel so much better... to be honest I'm not really sure why I shared that experience, but I just thought it was funny!

Well gotta go now! Know that I love you all and appreciate all the letters that are sent my way!

Have an AWESOME Christmas #ÉleslaDádiva

This is me enjoying the wonderful "Christmas Weather"

Working Hard/Following The Spirit - Family Committed To Baptism - People Gather In The Street To Listen

Okay I just want everyone to know that this week me and my companion have really been working hard. Not only in the roads, but in our study sessions trying to figure out how to teach the most effective way possible. We have come up with some good ideas for finding more people and for teaching better with the spirit. It is amazing what can happen when the companionship is united in the teaching. Recently we put a baptismal date with a family because of the new tactics we are trying, like allowing silence if the spirit calls for it, testifying of what my companion says is true, and they are excited to be baptized! We have a lot of work to do with them but we will do everything we can to help them reach their goal of baptism!

As missionaries, we really are trying to "catch em all" so I thought this picture would be extremely appropriate :)

I am not going to take a ton of time to write today because I still have to write my dad a nice long letter (its his birthday!!!!!!) but I wanted to include one of the coolest experiences I have had on my mission so far. (haha don't I always say that!?!?)

We got home from a zone meeting and realized we still had a little bit of time to go out and preach but not enough time to have a full lesson so we were going to just find someone and talk to them about the gospel in the street. We found someone sitting on a bench and started talking to her. We started talking to her about our beliefs and how we have a record that Jesus Christ came to the Americas and how we have a prophet in this day. As we talked, someone else came and started listening, and then someone else started listening, and people just kept coming! In the end there were 12 people listening to us preach about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. When I bore my testimony of the first vision of Joseph Smith, it was perfectly quiet, you could hear a pin drop. The spirit in that moment was so strong.  We asked the mini crowd who wanted a Book of Mormon and gave everyone who was interested a copy.  I don't know if any of them will be baptized in the future, but what I do know is that they know that I know this church is true.
Well I hope everyone is enjoying the snow while I burn my skin just by stepping outside ;) Haha! It really isn't that bad, i am pretty much used to it by now!

Love you all! But I gotta go!

Delayed P-day - Thanks E. Smith! - New Chilean Companion E. Venegas - Spiritual Experiences - Goal=Faith in every moment - Guided Prospecting - Strong Spirit - Testimony of the work...Not always a baptism, but always a stepping stone - An Excited Investigator Was Lost but then found again through faith and a miracle

Well, finally we have the chance to write! We had to postpone our P-day to Tuesday because there was a holiday here on Monday and nothing is open when there are holidays, and then when we came to the computer place, the power in the WHOLE CITY went out... so yeah we are here writing two days late :) Better late than never write_?
So first I want to say a big thanks to Elder Smith, he was really fun and really helped me learn more Spanish. Even though we both speak English, we never had an English conversation, and for that, our ability to speak has really increased. Even though he had only been here for 6 weeks like me, they called him to go serve in Paraguay for this transfer.

Now I have a new companion again! His name is Elder Venegas and he is from Chile! He lives in the area that 3 of my really good friends are serving! (Morgan Vorwaller, Brooke Squires and Jessica Mccubbins). My language ability has gotten to the point that with almost anybody I can understand pretty much 100 percent of what they say and we can have any type of conversation. But... with my new companion... well lets just say he talks reeeeeeaaally fast. Haha it is so awesome how fast he can talk and it is really helping me learn how to listen more closely for words.

He and I have already had some very spiritual experiences and I know it all has to do with the immense faith that he has. My goal this transfer (6weeks) is to learn how to truly show my faith in every moment. Not just have faith, but show it through action.

We were in an apartment complex clapping doors with little success. I finally turned to my companion, and told him that we better start heading to lunch. Without responding, he turned and clapped 1 more door. I thought, okay one more and then FOOD. When the door opened she looked surprised and told us that she had been waiting for us. We didn't understand because we just touched a random door. She said that her friend had told her about us and that she had been waiting for us. We were in shock. She accepted us and told us that the Herman Joseli had told her that we would come by, after the lunch we were just about to have. We were amazed that the spirit had really guided to her house. Because of that experience she was mentally prepared to accept us and the lesson was that much more spiritual because of that. In the end, we decided to have her join us for the lunch with the Hermana Joseli and we continued talking about the gospel.

In the end, she expressed a few doubts about what we had said to her, but the response to her doubts didn't come from us, they came from the Hermana Joseli. She said to her, "What more proof do you need, than that God sent these men to your home?"  In that moment the spirit was SO strong. I felt it, my companion felt it, and I know the investigator felt it as she began to cry.

These experiences I share with all of you, are so special to me. I love them and know that I am blessed with these experiences only by my faith of serving this mission. I also have to tell you, that we don't baptize every person with who we have a spiritual experience. Although they feel the spirit, does not mean that they will chose to follow Christ and be baptized. What it means to me, is that we were just a stepping stone for them in their journey towards Christ.

One more experience. One day we were waiting for a bus and a girl of about 20 years came up to me and asked me where I was from. I told her the states, and she was in shock! I told her that we were missionaries and that we are sharing the story of Christ and his birth as it is the Christmas season and that we wanted to visit with her family one day in the week. She was very animated and wanted to have us with her family. Right when she was giving us her direction our bus arrived and we had to go, so she didn't get to write her whole direction. When we went to search her house we realized she didnt put her house number and only her street name. I was devistated. I told my companion that I didnt know what we should do but he just turned to me and said, “Elder Graves, have faith, we will find her.” The first door we clapped at was hers.  I know the spirit guides the missionaries. I have seen it work in me and in my companionship.

I love you all and love this gospel

Patience & Hidden Successes/Baptisms - Apolonio & Others Baptized! - Enjoying the Rain/Taking the Sisters Home Safely - Birthday Celebrations - What is in a Name Tag? - Having Fun

As I have been here in Obera Argentina as I said before, I have learned patience. I have learned how to work, even when the fruits of the work are not plain to be seen. Every missionary strives to have baptisms and to teach lots of lessons and to work as hard as they are capable, but sometimes what you do just doesn't seem to be enough. After several rather disappointing weeks I really started to feel a little sad about the lack of progress. I had been talking to lots of missionaries from other missions through email, and they all seemed to have so much success, and it really hurt to feel like I wasn't making the impact I wanted to make. I now realize, that these feelings of sadness and disappointment could only be from the adversary.

Two days ago, one of the Assistants to the President called our companionship and said he wanted to talk to me. He told me that I had reason to be happy and the the fruits of my labor have been shown. I really didn't know what he was talking about and kinda wondered to myself if he knew which missionary he was talking to ;) He told me that partly because of my work in Carlos A. Lopez (My last area, which was in Paraguay) in the past 3 weeks, 7 people have been baptized.

This is the Man Äpolonio who we worked with so hard. He was baptized (sorry don't have pictures of all) this past month, and I think I told his story already but it really is a special one. He couldn't understand us because he doesn't hardly speak Spanish, but for some reason, that could only have been the spirit guiding us, we decided to bring a member to try and translate to Guarani. He began to really learn and truly feel the spirit. I am so proud of him and all the others that followed the example of our Savior.

Okay now on a different, slightly less spiritual note... Sometimes missionaries get the chance to have a little bit of fun too. We were having a meeting with the Ward Mission Leader, and when it ended the rain was so heavy I could not believe it. The roads were literally rivers. We live close to the church, but we decided it wouldn't be safe to leave the Hermanas to walk in the storm alone, so we walk/ran/swam ;) them home. Also we had to leave our ties behind, so sorry if this doesn't look quite like a missionary should, but we really were doing what we thought would be most safe. Anyway it was pretty fun to get to run in the rain like I used to do ALL THE TIME back home :)
So yeah I would almost never go outside without a tie, but they were saying it would ruin our ties if we let them get so wet so yeah :)
Well this is all of the Missionaries plus 2 in our district having a birthday celebration at the President of the Branch's house! Lots of birthdays lately! My district leader will also have his birthday tomorrow!

We received the news of our transfers, and EVERY MISSIONARY except for me and one Hermana will be leaving the Area. It is really crazy because she and I have to really teach people how things work around here! A bit nervous, but also super excited! Please keep me in your prayers for this transfer!!

I love you all and hope all is well!
Thank you for reading and hope this letter could help someone out there!

Elder Graves
This is Taylor's Dad speaking now.  Taylor sent me a couple of other pictures that I will include in his blog below.  I really like the picture of their nametags.  Each of the missionaries in the district placed his/her name tag on the tree.  It is very special to see each of their individual names on the same name plate as the church.  Even more importantly, each of them shares a name tag with the Savior "JesuCristo".  What an incredible opportunity and responsibility to represent Him.  I love the church's logo and how clearly, even in a foreign language, the name of Jesus Christ (or JesuCristo in Spanish) stands out in that name.  We are Christians.  We love the Savior.  What a blessing to have a son who has been called to represent Him.
This is a picture that Taylor sent home of his district and their "funny poses/faces".  Seems like they like to have fun :-) while serving.

Week of Hope/Waiting - Patience/Endure Well - 6 missionaries in one branch! - Protected/There is a brightness about you/I can't touch you

So this title of my email (La Semana de Esperanza) could either be translated to mean, "The Week of Hope" or "The Week of Waiting". Well, while there is always hope... lets just say there was a lot of waiting this week.

We had plans to travel to an area really far away in our area, called the palms, and we had to wait for a bus to get there. We were told that the bus would come at 10 o'clock. So we waited there and waited and waited and waited. Then finally, after lots of contacting in the bus stop, (which isn't the MOST effective way to contact) we got on the bus at 12. That same day, we had an appointment with our prime investigator. His name is Martin and I was suuuuper pumped to teach him because he has a real desire to learn. We waited in the chapel for 2 more hours with a member that night, because he kept telling us that he was on his way... but finally just told us that he didn't think it would be possible for him to make it :( We ended up just teaching him the next day at the Branch Presidents house, but we still waited a lot that day! I will tell you, there was more waiting than just that this week, but I wont go into details because there really were so many experiences this week with waiting.

As I was waiting for something this week, I would think about one of the things my mission president first told me when I had my first interview with him. He said "Elder Graves, if there is one thing you are going to learn here on your mission, it will be PATIENCE. It is so true. And I love that I can see myself improving in this aspect. It really is incredible how many blessings the mission brings.

"Patience is not simply enduring, it is enduring well."

Dieter F Uchtdorf

This too means, that even if we have to wait, we can always be doing something productive, and if we are doing that little productive thing, it really wont seem like we are waiting at all. This brings me to a point that kinda makes me a little sad. There are too many elders that I know that are only "enduring" there missions. To all those who will be leaving soon, or one day hope to serve, I hope you know a mission is much more fun, enjoyable and rewarding if you "endure it well."

This is my district leader Elder Nascimiento and I waiting for a bus to pass by so that we could do an activity with the district. We had to wait a lot, but it turned out to be an AWESOME P-day.

Here is a foto capa (cool picture)! We have been focusing on this little area of the city a lot lately and I thought this was a pretty interesting view with the run down appartments and trees also. It really shows the diversity of Obera.

Displaying DSCN1474.JPG  This is Taylor's Dad - I can't get this picture to work for some reason.  I'll see if I can get it from Taylor again next week.

This is my district! We are quite the team working out here in obera! The branch is really getting stronger having 6 missionaries in one branch. There really is a lot of work to do here. (Even if it is slow work). Today we went to a waterfall (don't worry it wasn't Iguazu Falls I will send much cooler pictures when I get the opportunity to do that! We were going to take a picture by the water fall... but it was full with lots and lots and lots of people (it almost seemed like they were flocking like zombies... I mean the waterfall was cool and all.. but not THAT cool,... ;) Anyway, for that we just took a picture here... I really enjoy this district and hope we get to stay together for awhile!

Well, one last experience. While Elder Smith and I were walking in the street, a man who seemed to be really drunk came up to us. My companion said we needed to just keep going, but  the guy was really insistent about talking to us. He stopped us and told us all about the Book of Mormon (sounds a little backwards right?) and was telling us that it wasn't true and all those things. We bore our testimonies, calmly saying what we KNEW it to be true. He wouldn't let it go. He kept talking to us and wouldn't allow us to keep going to our next appointment (don't worry, it never got dangerous or anything). He then went to touch me, on the shoulder, but said in Spanish "I cant touch you, there is a brightness about you and I cant touch you."

Although, I don't believe that he had plans of doing anything, I know that we are protected as missionaries. I love this gospel and could never express the amount of thanks I have for what it has given me.

Big House - Birthday Ice Cream Cake! - Splits with Elder Murrillo (A.P.) - Answered Prayers

Okay, so I just realized that I never showed you guys where we live right now... okay not really, but that would be pretty cool! I just had to show everyone that some of the houses we teach are soooo big. A lot of the time, we have to ring a bell, and they put a camera on our faces and they ask us through a speaker phone "¿que hacen?" which is like what are you guys doing? And then we talk for a bit, and if we are lucky they will come out! SUUUUPER "chuchi" or rich looking. Sometimes it is actually pretty hard to get lessons here, and when we do get them, it is hard to get return lessons. I have really learned a lot of things in this area already. One of them is DEFINITELY patience. Haha.

Well I should have put this first,... but oh well. My whole district surprised me with an Ice Cream cake at the very end of my birthday! It was awesome! We went in to an office in the church to work on some paper work or so they told me, and then the Hermanas came and started singing happy birthday! So that was awesome!

Well, Elder Murrillo (an assistant to the President) and I got to have divisions this week and it was so fun! He really knows how to teach people! I loved it! He will be leaving soon (2 weeks) and it is actually pretty sad for every body, because he really does inspire our mission. I was really happy to have the opportunity to be part of his last part of his mission.

Well I dont have much more time, but I just want to tell you all one last story. Our branch decided that we needed to start praying for investigators to find the missionaries and not only for the missionaries to find investigators. The whole branch has been praying for this to happen, and yesterday we were walking in the road and a man ran us down saying "Mormons! Mormons! I want you to teach me about the man Joseph Smith!!!"
If that wasnt a direct answer to our prayers, I dont know what would be. I know the power of prayer is powerful, and the prayer united by a ward or even by just a family can be even stronger. We taught him, and he loved the message. We were saddened to find out that he is traveling to Buenos Aires, the next day, but I pray that he will find more missionaries to continue teaching him.

I love you all and I love this gospel

PS. If I talk weird in these letters I am sorry. I dont think my English has been that badly effected yet, but I really do have to struggle for some phrases that I cant remember perfectly! Weird right??

19th Birthday! - Basketball! - Fat mannequins - Stuck in Apartment with sick companion - Testimony

Well I really have to start by saying thank you for the ridiculously awesome amount of birthday wishes from all of you! When I open up my email and see that I have more than 80 emails to read, I know I am loved :) So THANK YOU! You all have made my day soooo awesome! Also today we had the opportunity to have a multi zone meeting and we played BASKETBALL! There were more than 40 missionaries there and they all gathered around me and sang/scrame (not sure if that is a word I am almost 100% sure its not screamed) "Happy Birthday" to me. It was pretty funny because it was in English and most of them don't speak English! But I really got lucky to have such a big meeting on my birthday! Usually a birthday will pass unnoticed in the mission, but I got super lucky!
Also, my family is ridiculously awesome. About a month or so ago, I was looking into the deep pits of my suitcase and found that I had a b-day present! Also I found that I have a Christmas present that I will get to open later! (In my mission we can only recieve 2 packages a year so my mom got creative!).  Also, today my zone leader delivered another package from my family for my birthday! So tonight we are going to have a mini, party and open up my gifts!!!!
Sorry for the crazy face, but we had just woken up at 4:30 to go to the zone meeting (we have a lot of early mornings, and our nights are super late now, because our president changed our schedule to adjust to the ridiculous heat)!
This is me with Elder Winston again, and my other package that the zone leaders had just given me.
Well, we found these fat mannequins in the mall and could not stop laughing because... I don't know that is just super funny! But I decided it would be appropriate to take a photo with them because I literally just CAN NOT STOP GAINING WEIGHT! My body is used to having 3 or 4 runs everyday and much more physical activity than that, and my body is wondering what happened!!!!? But if I come home looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, you all still have to love me, or at least acknowledge me... ;)
My companion got sick recently and we had to stay in our pension all day. I was actually pretty concerned, because I figured I would be bored out of my mind! He literally slept and stayed in his bed for 36 hours straight! I felt pretty bad for him (I think he got up to use the restroom...) But I have a picture of me studying that day, because that day, truly was a day of loooots of studying.
11 hours straight to be exact. Yeah it was crazy. I literally couldn't put down the books. I can honestly say, that I now LOVE the scriptures. They continually amaze me. A dear friend of my family Brother Bob Christensen used to always say to me as well as say during his testimonies in testimony meeting, that every time he reads the Book of Mormon he has a strong feeling that the Book of Mormon really is scripture and the word of God.

*here in this picture I am comparing the sermon on the mount to the coming of Christ in 3 Nefi in English and Spanish, so lots of books!*

Well I just want all of you to know that I am doing well and am loving the life of a missionary. It is amazing how much I have grown (spiritually and physically...) I think of the boy that left for the MTC just short of 5 months ago and look at what I have already become and learned, and am truly amazed. The mission field really is the place to learn and to grow.

Les quiero mucho y espero que todos tengan una semana marivillosa

Trick or Treating Missionary Style - Clapping Doors in the Rain - New Area/Prospecting - Study With Faith and the Intent of Learning Truth

Although we are thousands of miles away, I wasn't about to miss out on Trick or Treating this year! Haha.  To be honest, I totally forgot that it was Halloween until the end of the day. Haha but we did get to go door to door, but we were the ones handing stuff out (Books of Mormon/Book of Mormons/Copies of the Book of Mormon).

So I really thought this was a funny picture. This is my new companion Elder Smith and it was POURING and his hands were full when he was trying to clap a house, so he balanced his umbrella (that took me like 15 seconds to remember what that word is in English....) on his head so that he could clap the house. Haha. Just thought you guys would think that was funny.
Right now we are searching, searching, searching and searching for new investigators. We just opened this area and that means there were 0 people who were already being prepared to be baptized. So we are always searching. While we were "Fishing for Men" we ran into a woman who told us that she had left the church more than 10 years ago, but wanted to be visited by the missionaries again. She introduced us to her husband who was smoking and was not a member. We talked with them and they told us that they want to get to the point where they can serve a mission together. Obviously they both have a long way to go, but I am very excited for there desire to progress. That is something that I have learned here recently. It is all about the desire. Countless times in the scriptures it tells us that we will earn what we truly desire in our hearts. It is undoubtedly true. If you have the desire, you WILL put in the work to accomplish that thing that you desire.

Random picture... didn't take that many this week - sorry. But this is Elder Winston and he is in the same pension as me! We get to spend a lot of time together and will even be doing a 3 day division (I think they call it "splits" in the states) while the other Elders are doing paper work in another part of Argentina. We were recently talking (we almost never talk in English now - even though in our Pension we have 3 gringos and 1 Brazilero. It is just more fun to speak in Spanish sometimes) and he told me that he felt like our life literally is like a movie. There are SO MANY funny moments, SO MANY hard moments, SO MANY lessons that we are able to learn here. It is really true. The life of a missionary really is like a movie. I wish I could record every moment of it so I could remember every detail.

I am realizing recently how far I have come in my testimony. I used to feel like I had a strong testimony, now I am realizing that I truly had a LONG  way to go (and still do). But my confidence in God is sure (as is my testimony of the Book of Mormon). Before my mission, I will be honest, I read it like a critic. Trying to find errors. I never found any, but I never progressed in my testimony either. Now I read with faith that it is the word of God, and every moment spent reading it is another step of progression. My challenge to you all this week is to read the Book of Mormon, not to prove it wrong (remember I tried and learned it's impossible) but with the intent of learning of the truth.

Love you all and am grateful for your prayers.

Goodbyes in Lopez - 2nd Area is Very Different - Clapping Doors - Spiritual Growth with Rejection - Elder Taylor Graves Meets Elder Taylor - Selfie With New Companion Elder Smith - Siesta - Taylor's Cross Country Brothers Took 2nd in State!!!

I have to start by saying how difficult it was to say goodbye to Lopez. We said our last goodbyes with so many people on Tuesday and I was surprised how many people had a hard time with it. It was really nice for me to see that I had touched their hearts in at least a small way.

First I just have to say... I am really just in a different mission. There is one similarity in this part of the mission and it is the words we are preaching. I will give you an example of the differences

Here is a picture out walking to an investigators house in the tiny area of Lopez:

This picture just illustrates everything about Lopez. You can just feel the hot by just looking at it right?

This is the only picture I have of me in my new area so far, so sorry it is kind of poor quality. But it does kinda illustrate how it is. This area is ENOURMOUS (I don't even remember how to spell that word...)  It is just a huge city and it is called Obera in Argentina. The people here are SO different. In Lopez, we could take 5 steps run into someone and we would have a lesson. Here it is quite the opposite. We will clap (yeah we don't knock, we clap, it's actually pretty weird for me now that we don't do that in the states....) a house and they almost always will get upset that we are bothering them. In just one week I have had countless doors shut in my face, seen many people run away from the door because they saw we were coming, so they wanted to hide themselves. Some might think that this would be hard on your testimony. So many people rejecting this message, that we have for them, you would think would make you doubt. But I can testify that it does the opposite. Every door that is shut on us, I remember how the blessings that I have received from this gospel have blessed my life, and how I desperately wish that they could have listened and learned of their incredible potential. I dont know yet how many people I will be able to help here in Obera, but if there is one person being spiritually strengthened, that person is me, and for that I am extremely thankful.

Random foto, this is when I had to say goodbye to me second trainer Elder Silva. He has taught me a lot and I am really grateful for everything he did for me. He is going to be training another newbie out in Lopez. I am really excited for them because they have at least 3 baptisms coming up!! (One of them, Apalonio, who is 82 - and I cant remember if I already told you guys that... but oh well)
Also on the far left is Elder Taylor. I am still pretty confused about the story, but his mom or dad or somebody, has known my mom since highschool. Anyway, I have heard from many missionaries that he was hoping to meet me and we finally got to!! He is 6 foot 7! He also is the missionary who started the area of Lopez. We are all very grateful for his work out there in Lopez.

Okay don't make fun of me... I know I am a missionary, but sometimes...·#
youjustgottatakeaselfie.
(I don't know if hash-tags are still a thing. ;) haha sike I am sure they are...
But this is my new companion and his name is Elder Smith! He is super cool and has 10 months out in the mission!
This is during the siesta. It is the time when EVERYONE  is sleeping EXCEPT THE MISSIONARIES! Haha. I still dont understand it, but for some reason, in Argentina, people stop working, close all stores, and stop all human life at 12 until 4 to get some extra sleep... haha its pretty funny.

Here is a picture of some of my best friends (including my brother, the tall blonde one.. oh wait...) They took second in State this week and I am SO PROUD of them. The last thing I said to my brother as I said goodbye to him at the MTC was "Go get State."  These boys did exactly that. Jake told me that they read the letter that I wrote them a while back reminding them of this goal that I hoped they would set right before the race. (You can find this hand written letter in this blog.) It makes me so happy to know that my BROTHERS are remembering me and that maybe I had affected them in some small way. They really are my BROTHERS and I could never be more proud of them. This victory of theirs, truly inspires me. I don't know why, but hearing about this makes me want to work. Work hard while I am here. Jake and the others worked hard in running. I now have another source of motivation. My BROTHERS from cross country. I will never forget those times I had with them, and I am so happy they have accomplished what they have.

Thank you for inspiring me guys.

I love you all. I am so grateful for the countless letters and emails I have been receiving. If I ever don't respond, please know that I truly want to, and that I always LOVE reading your letters, but sometimes there just isn't time.

Love you all!

5 Cousin Missionaries - 105 deg F - Speaking Spanish Well! - Guided by the Spirit - Members donate land for church building - Last talk in Lopez - Transfered to Argentina - Baptisms to come

The first thing I want to say is this week I have been thinking a lot about the cousins that I have out serving missions. First there is Souer Kayla Cummings who entered the field at the same time as me. She is serving in Canada speaking French.  Then there is my cousin and best friend Elder Braden Birch who has been serving in Oklahoma for more than a year. Then there is my other Cousin Elder Kaden Holmgren who is finishing his mission in Xalapa Mexico. Now my cousin Elder Cameron Cummings is joining the force and serving one country away from me in Brazil. I am so proud of each one of my cousins for there decision to serve. I was thinking about how cool it would be to have the opportunity to work alongside them, but then I realized... hey, I really am working alongside them. This work is the same here, Brazil, Canada, the USA, and Mexico and all other countries. Thank you to all of my cousins for helping this work go forth along side me.

Dad, please put a picture of all 5 of us if possible :)

So this week I have several points that are kind of random, but I am just going to go for it :)

1. This past week it passed 105 degrees with EXTREME HUMIDITY 4 times. You have to keep in mind that there are still more than 2 months til "summer" officially starts.

2. During one of my lessons with investigators, one of the people asked me, "so Elder Graves, how many years have you been speaking Castelleno (Spanish)?"  When I told them "for less than 4 months" they were shocked! Haha, I have sooooooooooo much to learn but I am so grateful for what I have learned already! It is amazing how much the Lord can help you learn a language, when you are faithfully doing his work.

3. There is a less active member who we had been visiting and trying to reanimate her and help her realize the blessings of the church. One day she moved to another house without telling us anything and we were very surprised when we didn't find her one day in her house. We had looked and looked and looked for her for more than a week, asking people where she moved, but couldn't find her. One day while thinking about asking around again where she lived, we decided that we would just do some contacting and hope that we might find her new house. The FIRST house we contacted, was her house. This was a miracle and is pure evidence to me that the spirit truly does guide us.

4.We have the best members here in Lopez. They continue to surprise me and bless the church in countless ways. This week a family in our group offered their land (where 3 houses that they own are located) to the Branch President, so the church could use the land to build a church building. They truly are amazing members.

5.Finally I got to give another talk in Church and direct the sacrament meeting this week. Although I am starting to feel more comfortable with the language, it is still super scary! The reason I gave my talk (and the members didn't know this until I said it in my talk) is because I will be leaving Paraguay and going to a city (that I still don't know the name of) in Argentina. In the last part of my talk as I told them that I loved them, and they were like my family and it was hard to have to say goodbye to my family again, I saw many people crying. These people really have become like my family, even though we still have a bit of a language barrier, it is going to be so hard to leave.

6. The really hard part about leaving is that we have 5 people who will be baptized within the next month and a half. One of them is Apolonio who is 83 years old who I sent a picture of recently. Although I wont be there for there baptisms, it makes me so happy that I had the opportunity to help them in this very important journey.

Thank you for your love and support. I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve in the same country that my Dad served in 22 years ago. I will be traveling to Argentina in 2 days, and will update you more next week.

Love you all,

Elder Graves

1. The two families that have helped us the most. The family Ramirez and The family Echardt Ramirez. I love them and hope I can one day see them again

2. My last sacrament meeting here. Even though it rained, (which usually means you don't do anything here in Paraguay) we had the biggest assistance to the church since I have been here in these 3 months.
